Crime Stoppers, 1 the successful program which has ferreted out information leading to arrests in crimes which baffled law enforcement agencies, is asking for assistance in solving two Elloree cases. Elloree Chief of Police Randall Aragon said Monday that he has asked Crime Stoppers to work with him in finding evidence regarding two burglaries.

Obituaries Mrs. Evelyn F. Brown CRESCENT CITY, Fla. Mrs. Evelyn Franklin Brown, 51, of 633 Lemon Crescent City, died Wednesday at her residence after a brief illness.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Grove AME Church in Cordova, S.C., with the Rev. I. Pringle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Mrs. Brown was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of Mrs. Inez Calloway Franklin and the late Clemmon Franklin. She was a member of Cedar Grove AME Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Henry Browq of Orangeburg; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Wilson, Mrs. Inez Hardy and Ms. Evelina Brown, all of Crescent City; a son, Henry Clay Brown of Orangeburg; her mother of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Lee and Mrs.

Betty Rose Franklin, both of Orangeburg; two brothers, Clemmie Franklin and Bobby Franklin, both of Orangeburg; and 10 grandchildren. Friends may call at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Gladys Lee, at 610 Seawright Orangeburg, and at Simmons Funeral Home in Orangeburg. Mrs. Sallie Myers Carr CAMERON, S.C.

The funeral for Mrs. Sallie Myers Carr, 95, of Route 1, Box 475, Cameron, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke AME Church in Lone Star, with the Rev. J.L.

Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnnie Brunson, Eddie Ellis, Leroy Hampton, Nathaniel Robinson and Willie Robinson. Mrs. Carr was born in Vance, a daughter of the late Mr.

and Mrs. Harry Myers. She was the widow of Sidney Carr. She was a member of St. Luke AME Church in Lone Star, where she was affiliated with the Senior Choir and the missionary society.

She attended Claflin College and was a member of the YMCA. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Simmons of Lone Star; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sallie Bethea of Columbia; three nieces, Mrs. Lucille Bodrick of Lone Star, Mrs.

Jessie Curry of Elloree and Ms. Lurlee Myers of Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the residence. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Cameron.

The Rev. Talton Gamble The Rev. Talton Gamble, 73, of 1685 Shirley Orangeburg, died Saturday. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bythewood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev.

F.G.S. Everett officiating. Burial will be in Orangeburg Cemetery. The Rev. Gamble was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Rev.

Isaac and Mrs. Mary Dukes Gamble. He finished high school in Calhoun County and attended Morris College in Sumter. The Rev. Gamble served as pastor for numerous AME churches in the Wateree, Manning and Orangeburg areas.

Survivors include a brother, Willie Gamble of Orangeburg; a "When I worked in Richland County," Aragon said, "I was the liaison for the whole department with Crime Stoppers. I knew how good it worked there and since I had a couple of unsolved burglaries, I called them to see if they could help me down here." Aragon said Crime Stoppers personnel told him they have no office closer than Columbia so the cases are being worked through there. Investigator Jim Sweatt of the Columbia Police Department is the Crime Stoppers coordinator. He said they will be working with Chief Aragon on Early deadline The deadline for funeral homes to submit obituaries for the New Year's Day edition will be 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Leticia "'Lettie" Devereux Gilmore, 91, of Fort Motte, died Sunday at St. George Health Care Center in St. George. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St.

Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by Father Francis J. Travis. Final commendation and farewell prayers will be in Kelly Cemetery, Columbia. Mrs. Gilmore was born in Columbia, a daughter of the late Patrick and Martha Marsh Devereux.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Columbia, and widow of the late FANK Henry Gilmore. Survivors include a son, Francis Patrick Gilmore of Fort Motte; and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church Building Fund in Orangeburg.

Mrs. Birdie W. Hartley BATESBURG, S.C. Mrs. Birdie Warner Hartley, 68, Route 2, Batesburg, died Monday morning at her home.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wittenberg Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Batesburg Cemetery. Active pallbearers include Kevin O. Hartley, Billy Watson, Benjy Watson, Richard Schneider, Fred Oswald, Steve Dan Warner Randy Warner, Chris Warner, John Steele, Randy Fox and Wayne Fox.

Mrs. Hartley was born in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Willie Preston and Lizzie Hayes Warner. She was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church, a retired employee of Hartwell Industries and an employee of Barr Funeral Home. Survivors include a son, Donald 0. Hartley of Batesburg; a daughter, Mrs.

Charles (Zelma) McGee of Batesburg; two brothers, Brooks F. Warner of Virginia Beach, and Daniel D. Warner Sr. of Orangeburg; three sisters, Mrs. John (Iva) Livingston of Orangeburg, Mrs.

Samuel (Eva) Watson Sr. of Batesburg and Mrs. Clyde (Anne) Oswald of Leesville; and two grandchildren. Barr Funeral Home of Leesville is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Wittenburg Lutheran Church or to the Heart Fund.

Joseph H. Heape MANNING, S.C. Joseph Hallette Heape, 88, of 601 Morris Manning, died Sunday in a Sumter hospital. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Presbyterian Church at Manning, with Dr.

William Holmes officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lone Star. Calhoun County, a son of the late James P. and Anna Felkel Heape.

He was a retired clerk and treasurer of the city of Myrtie Beach for 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He was a member and elder emeritus of the Presbyterian Church at Manning and a past member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach for 35 years, where he also served as superintendent of the Sunday school for 17 years. Survivors include his widow, Kathleen Stoudenmire Heape of Manning; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning or to a charity of choice.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of ar- Mrs. Beatrice Kennedy THOMSON, Ga. Mrs. born in Beatrice Kennedy, 70, of 609 Holt Thomson, died Sunday at McDuffie County Hospital. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Curtis Funeral Home Chapel in Thomson, with the Rev. Billy Widner officiating. Burial will be in Savannah Valley Memorial Park, also in Thomson. Pallbearers will be H.N. Kennedy Larry Maxwell, G.H.

Cosby, Hubert W. Kennedy, Dwight Shelton and Sheriff William Swann. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Wilkes County. She was a member of Hill Baptist Church and a retired textile worker.

Survivors include a sister, Suzie Maxwell of Washington, brothers, Henry Nathan Kennedy Adolphus Kennedy, Nelson Kennedy, all of Thomson, and Livingston Kennedy of Brehmen, Texas; two great-nephews, Hubert Wainwright Kennedy and Todd R. Louis B. McCollum, 68, of North, died Monday. Funeral plans will be announced by Culler Funeral Home. Mrs. Katherine Smoak EHRHARDT, S.C.

Mrs. Katherine C. Smoak, 79, of Broadway Street, died Sunday at her home after a brief illness. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St.

James United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Brice Litchfield and the Rev. Gary Mullinax officiating. Burial will be in Ehrhardt Cemetery. Mrs.

Smoak was born in Great Falls, a daughter of the late Dr. James H. and Laura Furman Roberts. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and served as church organist for many years.

She was a graduate of Lander College, a school teacher, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Preston F. MILKIE Staff Writer Threatened by a butcher knife wielded by a young black male, a 19-year-old woman was raped early Sunday morning. Lt.

Harold Carter of the Orangeburg Police Department said the OPD also arrested a burglary suspect and responded to a suspected arson and several other incidents during the weekend. He said the rape victim, a young black female, was alone in a boarding house, as most of the other occupants were away for the holidays. Carter said the victim told police she was watching television in her room and fell asleep. She woke suddenly to see someone at the side of her bed. The black male, described as approximately 25 years of age, warned the girl to be quiet and threatened her with a butcher knife.

He raped her and then warned her again and left. When officers arrived, they found the man had gained entry to the house through a window on the tr far side of the building, away from the victim's room. Patrolman Francis Gibson and Ptl. Adrienne Blume were the initial investigators. Carter said Detective Dennis Romanstine and the entire detective division are following up on the investigation.

Lt. Carter said this was only one of the investigations carried out by the OPD during the weekend. They arrested one man in the act of burglarizing a local store. About 8:26 p.m. Friday, Dec.

27, Patrolman David Toomer was alerted that a silent alarm was sounding at Ace Hardware on lower Russell Street. He went to the location and saw glass broken out in the front door. Carter said Toomer got out of his patrol car and walked over to the front of the building and the suspect came running out of the door through the hole in the glass. Toomer gave chase, running down the suspect near the entrance to the Edisto Memorial Gardens. He arrested George Simmons, 28, a black male who lives at Route 1, Box 99, Orangeburg.

Also they responded to 3 grand larceny auto, with recovery; grand larceny of a truck; 2 simple assaults and robberies; 6 housebreaking and grand larcenies; 4 grand larcenies; 2 trespassing; 2 intoxicated pedestrians; 4 complaints of loud music; loitering; report of a man with a gun; 2 mental patients; and one case of child abuse.

They also responded to 2 incidents of attempted burglary; 3 public disorderly conduct; 8 disturbances; 3 missing persons (2 have been found); 3 breach of trust; flim flam; DUI; car fire; 2 housefires; prowler; harassing phone call; taking a subject into protective custody; one simple possession of marijuana; 2 incidents of discharging a firearm; an attempted rape; armed robbery and grand larceny of an auto with recovery of the auto; and assisting the S.C. Highway Patrol. Orangeburg Police Department The OPD made one arrest, for with the name brands of Skil and Black and Decker. On Dec. 14 to 16, between 1 a.m.

and 8 a.m., the Carolina Furniture Co. was entered by prying open the rear door. The thieves took assorted Timex ladies and mens' watches, assorted jewelry and portable stereos and television sets. The name brands included Samsung, Magnavox and Sylvania. Again, the hot-line number for Crime Stoppers is 799-9001 if you wish to give any information regarding these crimes.

David Bolen arrived to assist Simmons and after the suspect was in custody, they found a bag which he apparently had intended to take from the building. In the bag were 15 firearms, valued at about $2,800. The OPD also assisted the Orangeburg Fire Department at a burglary and suspected arson at Orangeburg Manor Apartments.

Carter said the apartment, occupied by Eleanor Connor, 67, was broken into through the front window of the building. Apparently the thief, or thieves, rummaged through the apartment but did not take anything. Ms. Connor was hospitalized at the time. After pawing through the apartment, Carter said they set fire to the sleeper sofa using newspapers.

Ptl. Adrienne Blume was the responding officer and the detective division is following up on the case. In four other incidents, four different cars were broken into. Three of the locations were at downtown area churches and the fourth at a residence, Carter said. Two shotguns and a rifle were taken from one vehicle.

A radar detector was taken from another and from a third, a new pocketbook with contents was stolen. Another break-in occurred between Dec. 21 and 178 Elmwood the residence of Clarence Brailey. The family was in the process of moving, Carter said, and someone broke a window out on the side of the house. They took two coffee tables, a large mirror, a Sunbeam mixer, mirrored wall sconces, pictures, dishes, pots, pans and other household items, valued at about $1,000.

Patrolman Marion Thompson responded and the theft is being investigated by the detective division. Another break-in at 1530 Central Trailer Park, Lot No. 17, occurred between 12:30 and 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28.

The residence of Allen J. Loving was entered through the front door by cutting a hole in the screen. An Emerson VCR and a Lloyd radio-phone, valued at $500, were taken. Toomer also responded to this and the detective division of OPD is following up on the case. breaking and entering in the 2nd degree, between Friday 8 a.m.

and Monday 8 a.m. Officers also investigated 11 accidents; an aggravated assault; 2 simple assaults; an animal call; arson; breaking and entering a motor vehicle with loss; 6 disturbances; 2 doors found open; harassment; business housebreaking; 6 residential housebreakings. Also a grand larceny; larceny of motor vehicle parts; shoplifting; 4 vehicle contents larceny; missing person (found); public drunk; forcible rape; 7 suspicious activities; 5 unclassified events; and 3 incidents of vandalism. Orangeburg Fire Department Lt. Freddie Antley said the OFD responded to a couple of housefires, one which is being considered as arson, and a rash of grass fires during the period from 4 p.m.

Friday to reporting time Monday at 5 p.m. Friday, at 4:54 p.m., a truck and 3 men responded to Bruin Parkway, off U.S. Hghway 601 at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, for a grass fire. There was minor damage. At 6:40 p.m., a truck and three men responded to another grass fire at 1212 Magnolia St.

Saturday began early, at 12:54 a.m., with three trucks and six men responding to 1100 Wolfe Trail, Orangeburg Manor Apartments. They extinguished a fire in Apartment 211 which apparently began in the living room area. He said the department is treating this as a possible breaking and entering and arson. He said they estimated the damage to be around $2,000 with a couch and walls fire damaged and smoke damage to the entire apartment. The occupant of the apartment, Eleanor Connor, was in the hospital at the time.

At 9:10 a.m., 2 trucks and 6 regular men responded to Orangeburg Mall but were recalled on the way. It was a false alarm. Sunday, at 1:42 a.m., a truck and 3 men responded to another grass fire on the highway right-of-way in the 1700 block of Magnolia Street. Also on Sunday, firemen responded to a dumpster fire on the Columbia Road. At 10:30 p.m., a truck and three men went to a mobile home fire at 3254 Haynes the residence of Cola Bryant.

The fire appeared to have started in the fireplace, Lt. Antley said, but the damage was minor. At 10:47 p.m., FP 1 and two other units repsonded to the Power Oil Co. on Dorchester Avenue to investigate smoke coming from a chimney, but there was no fire located. Monday, at 1:16 p.m., the OFD responded to a woods fire at Broughton Street and the U.S.

Highway 178 Bypass, near the Prince of Orange Mall. Lt. Antley said a small area of grass and pine straw was burning and firemen extinguished it. Antley said they believe people throwing firecrackers may' be responsible for the numerous grass fires the department has been chasing down during the past week.
