ByLXZmiCK Staff Writer ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. Two women were injured in a two-car, head-on collision Wednesday morning on U.S. Highway 601 near St. Matthews.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper 1st Class V.R. Burkett said the accident occurred about 8:15 a.m. on a stralght-away road near Hutto'a Transmission, four miles south of St Matthews. Victims of the accident were Mary Louise Harmon, 34, of Route 3, Box 608, St Matthews, and Vicki Brooks Stradling, 29, of P.O. Box 19, Doodle Hill Road, St Matthews.

Ms. Harmon was driving a 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Ms. Stradling was driving a 1981 Pontiac Trans Am, Burkett said. He said Ms. Stradling sustained head injuries, and Ms.

Harmon received cuts and abrasions. The Jamison Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene after Ms. Harmon's automobile began to smoke. Burkett said the car apparently was not on fire, but the fire department was able to contain the smoke. Both women were transported to Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Hospital by the Calhoun County Rescue Squad.

An O-CRH spokesman said Ms. Harmon was treated and released about noon, but Ms. Stradling was admitted to the intensive care unit and was listed in fair condition. Although it was raining heavily and visibility was poor when the accident occurred, Burkett said "it appears, now, the rain was not the cause of the accident." He did say both cars were "almost completely demolished." Burkett would not say in which direction the women were driving, saying that his investigation is incomplete. He did not know whether or not the women were wearing safety belts.

No charges have been filed, he said. Mrs. Wilhemena King BROOKLYN, N.Y. The funeral for Mrs. Wilhemena King, 70, of Brooklyn, will be held at 4 p.m.
