StateLocal Page 6A, Orangeburg, S.C., Monday, February 5, 1996 Santee motorcyclist dies in accident report A motorcyclist died Saturday of injuries he sustained in a collision with a pickup truck near Santee, according to Cpl. Melonie Anderson, spokesperson for the S.C. Highway Patrol. The accident occurred on S.C. Highway 210, 4-12 miles south of Santee, at 4:20 p.m.

The investigating officer was Trooper G. W. Matthews. A 1978 Ford pickup truck, owned and driven by Richard T. Jefferson, 68, of 1828 St.

Louis Columbia, was traveling west on S.C. 210. Behind it was a 1995 Kawasaki motorcycle, owned and driven by Dewayne Emanuel Gantt, 22, of 108 Bronco Court, Santee. The passenger was Maurice Williams, 21, P.O. Box 31, Lodge Hill Road, Vance.

Neither wore a helmet. As the truck began to turn right onto Vance Street, the motorcycle began to pass on the right, although it's a two-lane road. The motorcycle scraped the passenger side of the truck and the driver ran into the mirror. The passenger fell off the bike, while the motorcycle continued with the driver 100 yards beyond the site of the impact and went into a ditch where the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. Gantt suffered massive head trauma and was flown to Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

He was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. Williams refused treatment at the scene, but reportedly showed up at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg later. Elsewhere, at least six other people died in South Carolina traffic accidents over the weekend, including three riding in the same car during a three-vehicle accident in Fairfield County, the state Highway Patrol reported via The Associated Press. Terry Bernard Morgan, 26, from Blair, was driving Friday night just west of Winnsboro when he was involved in a fatal accident on state secondary highway 61. Two passengers, Nathan Adams and Quazaus Feaster, also died in the crash.

Adams was 15 and Feaster 16. Both were from Blair. Others killed include: A pedestrian in Horry County who died after she was hit by a car Saturday night. Betty Jean Henderson, 37, of Conway, died after being hit one mile south of state secondary highway 243. Joseph Hicks of Simpsonville crashed into a truck in front of him on 1-385 on Saturday morning.

State troopers say Hicks was driving at a high rate of speed heading north. They say when Hicks crested the hill, the truck was in front of him and he could not avoid it. Michael Rhett Lecroy, 38, Greenwood, was killed after he apparently ran a redlight and was broadsided by another car Saturday morning, according to police reports. Witnesses say Lecroy disregarded the traffic signal and was thrown from his car when hit by the vehicle driven by Greg Rankin Wrenn. Ex-Elloree music director wins on 'Price is Right' By The Associated Press MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.

A former music director at Elloree High School in Orangeburg County, Erich Hunn of Myrtle Beach left as a part-time musician, but he is coming back slightly richer. The German-born man won prizes, including a dinette set and a $14,000 trip for two to Switzerland on CBS's "The Price is Right." The show will air March 18. "I'm having a ball," Hunn said from Los Angeles. "I knew I was a winner." Hunn and his girlfriend's daughter, Renee McGinley and her husband Joseph both of Hawaii sat on an aluminum bench with several rain-soaked ticket holders waiting to get into the CBS Studios. "We were sitting out there in the cold and I was cheering them up, Hunn said.

"I said, "Don't worry about it, because I'm going to win anyway.m Once inside, the 66-year-old man was no stranger to the game show's practices and came fully equipped with questions when he was selected as one of the contestants. Once the bidding started, he asked host Bob Barker if the tea tray up for bid was gold-plated or sterling silver. "It mattered because I know that the gold-plated is usually priced at about $500," Hunn said. "He said, So I bid $1,200 and the rest said $300. The actual price was $1,245." Later, after reaching the "showcase" part of the show, he wanted a red Camaro but a farmer from Iowa had the first bid.

While the farmer did not get the car, Hunn said he was $250 away from the car and his own showcase. So he walked away with the trip to the Grand Hotel Victoria in Bern and tickets to a mountain ski resort. Hunn said his only bad moment in Los Angeles was not being able to groove with musicians at B.B. King's Blues Club in Hollywood Thursday evening. Though he always carries his baritone saxophone with him, he left it in the hotel that night.

Two years ago, Hunn received a degree from the University of South Carolina and plans to continue his education. He advised people to follow their dreams no matter their age or station in life. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Barnwell County. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Mr. Mathis died Wednesday. He was born June 3, 1948, in Aiken, a son of Frankie Mae Bates Mathis and the late Joe Mathis.

He was educated in the public schools of Aiken County. Mr. Mathis was employed as a horse groomer at the Paxson Stables. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Shirlean Mathis, of Aiken; four daughters, Lakeshia Mathis of Williston, Shannon Turner, Latasha Turner and Tiesha Turner, all of Roanoke, a son, Jeffrey W.

She was a sewing machine operator and a former employee with Bamberg County Hospital in the housekeeping department. Mrs. Wiggins was a member of McCune Branch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board, the Missionary Society and the Mass Choir. She was the widow of Robert Lee Wiggins. Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Barnwell of Ehrhardt; two sisters, Helen Dickerson of Ehrhardt and Evelyn Jones of New York; a brother, Jerod Crosby of New York; and four grandchildren.

Jenkins and Sallie Robinson Jenkins. She attended the North Industrial School. At an early age, Mrs. Livingston joined St. Dorcas Baptist Church and later moved to Brooklyn, where she attended Emanuel Baptist Church.

She was retired from the Farragut Daycare Center in Brooklyn. She was married to the late Thomas Livingston. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Judy L. Jackson of Brooklyn; two sons, Thomas Livingston Jr.

Jim Miles continues to seek support for a possible GOP primary challenge of U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, while Thurmond supporters warn a challenge will jeopardize Miles' political future.

Thurmond, at 93 seeking his eleventh full term, has faced soft poll numbers indicating a large concern about his age. "I am looking at it very carefully. I am very concerned that this seat is at risk. I'm getting prepared to run if I conclude we stand a substantial chance of losing this seat in November," said Miles, a Republican who won his second term as secretary of state two years ago. "Nobody who has run against Strom Thurmond in the past three decades has ever been elected to another political office," said state Sen.

John Courson, R-Columbia, a former campaign chairman and treasurer for Thurmond. Republican officeholders and GOP strategists say Miles is on a pointless quest that will only' cost Thurmond precious resources that could be used in the November election against Democratic challenger Elliott Close. Columbia apartment By The Associated Press WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. A man and a woman have been found dead in an apartment, killed by someone who knocked on their door, police say.

John Edward Pimpkin, 63, and Susan Epstein Furman, 44, were murdered in their living room Friday night by someone who knocked on their door and then attacked the couple, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said. "There is some evidence to suggest that robbery may be the motive," Metts said. Both victims suffered extensive head trauma, but the weapon used has not been positively identified, Metts said. Deputies found the victims after responding to a 911 call from a woman who was talking to Furman on the telephone at the time of attack. The woman told dispatchers she heard what she thought was the someone coming to the door of the victims' house, then a scream, then silence.
