Mystery surrounds the foreign-based horses running in the Kentucky Derby. They haven't even raced in the United States this year. Still, that's no reason to count 'em out. Irish-based Johannesburg and his stablemate, Castle Gandolfo, and Sheik Mohammed's Essence of Dubai are considered as likely to win as any of the 3-year-olds in Saturday's 20-horse field.

"We may not know anything about them, but I don't have any doubt they will be fit," said Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who'll try to win his fifth Derby with long-shot Proud Citizen. "You can't throw them out," said John Toffan, owner of 5-1 co-second choice Came Home. "They know what they're doing over there," said Ken McPeek, who trains 9-2 favorite Harlan's Holiday. He has Essence of Dubai and 2-year-old champion Johannesburg on his short list of possible winners.

"They will win it. It's just a matter of time," said Bob Baffert, who has two Derby runners with long-shots War Emblem and ship of Michael Tabor and John Magnier is trying the same thing. "The sheik's biggest goal is to win the race coming from Dubai," said Tom Albertrani, Godolphin's assistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor. "I think that would be a great accomplishment for him because if against the odds, and he likes that challenge." This is the fourth year of the plan, with China Visit's sixth-place finish in 2000 being Godolphin's best effort. Tabor, an Englishman who made millions running betting parlors, won the 1995 Derby with Thunder Gulch, but the horse trained and raced exclusively in the United States.

This is the first time Coolmore is sending Irish-based runners to the Derby. "I hope this is the first of many years that we will have runners," said Tabor in a recent conference call from his home in Monte Carlo. "Winning with Thunder Gulch whetted my appetite." Johannesburg, who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last October in his only U.S. race, has been hidden away in Lexington after shipping in Tuesday night. The son of Hennessey was the 2-year-old champion after winning all seven starts in 2001.

Kentucky Derby hopeful Essence of Dubai is guided around the Churchill Downs track by exercise rider Lee Roebuck during his exercise Monday, April 29, in Louisville, Ky. Johannesburg is a co-third choice at 6-1; Essence of Dubai is 15-1; and Castle Gandolfo, making his American debut, is 20-1. Lukas concludes: "They're the factor in here big time." And that's part of the mystique: Can a foreign-based horse that doesn't go through the traditional American prep races win the Derby? Sheik Mohammed's Godolphin Racing is determined to win by sending horses over from Dubai. "We still can win the championship but we have no room for error and we must have some one else step up and give us the points we would have gotten from Justin in the long jump and Kelvin in the 400 meters," Tche said. Expected to carry the banner for the Bulldogs are sprinters Jeffrey Fourth, Jermaine Brown and Jamar Glenn. Also Kenny Telemaque in the 400 meters, despite not being at full strength, hurdlers Errick Dixon, DaShawn Gregg and Jason Martin, pole vaulter Spencer Stephens and Darryl Reeves in the long jump. Other contenders in the men's division are North Carolina runner-up to the Bulldogs at the indoor championship, last year's winner Norfolk State, Coppin State and host Florida The SCSU women will be spearheaded by sprinter and hurdler Falawna Ingram, sprinters Emma Wade, and Celine Nyanga, hurdler Kim-berly Works, quarter miler Sharon Williams, and Cora Johnson and Danielle Smith in the long jump. Norfolk State is the defending champion in the women's division and among this year's favorites.

Also expected to do well are Delaware State, the surprise winner at the indoor championship, Hampton, Morgan State and the Lady Bulldogs. Friday's competition gets underway at 9 a.m. with mostly preliminary events and some field events. Saturday's finals will also begin at 9 a.m. By BILL HAMILTON Special to The TStD TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

The South Carolina State men's and women's track and field teams will be among eleven (11) schools vying for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday (May 3-4) in Tallahassee, Fla. The SCSU men, who earlier captured the MEAC indoor title and the S.C. State Intercollegiate Championship, are among the favorites to win this week's crown in their division. However, coach Ernest Tche's team will be without two of its top performers long jumper Justin McCorkle, along with Orangeburg's Kelvin Green, a key performer in the 400 meters and on relay teams. Both are nursing hamstring pulls and did not make the trip.

The absence of the two will make SCSU's effort to sweep the league's track titles this year more difficult, according to Tche, who has been instrumental in restoring the track program at the institution. "We will miss both Justin and Kelvin," Tche said. "Justin finished second at the indoor championship and has only lost twice outdoors (finishing second both times) this season, so his loss is very big for us. And Kelvin has been very competitive in the 400 meters and on our 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams. We hope that some of our other people will step up and give us the points "those guys would have given us," 1 I vJm 1 I i ililf ma SCSU's Ebony gets MEAC Softball honor TRACK? M.
