The new law will encourage residents to pay property taxes and register their cars, said Beaufort County Sheriff PJ. Tanner. It also will give officers a way to enforce the state's 45-day limit on driving without a stateissued license plate, Tanner said.

May God bless each and everyone of you. The Staley Family looks like it has been around longer than the 45-day grace period, officers may not stop drivers to make sure a state-issued tag is on the way, Tanner said. The sheriff said an incident that went to trial in 2000 highlighted the need for a change in law. A deputy pulled over a driver with a dealer tag who was driving suspiciously and found the driver had a suspended license as well as a cache of cocaine in the vehicle, Tanner said.

But the judge threw the case out, ruling that the deputy did not have probable cause for DEADLINES IN MEMORIAMS BIRTHDAY ADS Publication Date Deadline MONDAY 10AM TUESDAY NOON WEDNESDAY NOON THURSDAY NOON FRIDAY NOON SATURDAY NOON SUNDAY NOON The Times and Democrat stopping the driver. "I knew right then things needed to change," Tanner said. Under the new law, new-car buyers still will have 45 days to register vehicles and buy state license plates but they will not be allowed to leave on dealer's tags or create their own tags. Drivers must purchase an "official" temporary tag that includes an expiration date 45 days after the sale of the car. Temporary tags will be available from Division of Motor Vehicles offices, county auditors or car dealers.

The state agency and county auditors can charge a $5 fee for the tags, but the law mandates that fees go to defraying the cost of producing and issuing the tags. In Loving Memory of Dec.
