THE TIMES AND DEMOCRAT I www.TheTandD.com LOCALSTATE 4A FRIDAY, IULY 16, 2004 OBITUARIES Baby dies after mother gives him methadone Baby Boy Alex Skylar Chavis set Hayes' bail at $75,000 on one charge of unlawful conduct toward a child. That felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Methadone, a powerful narcotic, can be used to wean drug addicts from heroine or prescription narcotics. Used properly, methadone, is effective for its intended purpose. Ed Johnson, the adrninistrator of the Charleston Centers opiate treatment program, said.

But the drug can be dangerous if misused. Trey Hayes said his sister's child had been sick with pneumonia and, despite several visits to the doctor, he was not getting better. He said his sister used a small amount of methadone as a last ditch effort to ease her son's discomfort. "He was crying and crying, and she didn't know what to do," Trey Hayes said. "She didn't mean for her baby to die." His sister "is a really good person," he said.

"She didn't mean for this to happen." CHARLESTON (AP) A Charleston County woman is facing a charges after she told authorities she gave her 5-month-old son methadone to ease teething pain and he died. Jamie Danielle Hayes, 27, is a recovering heroine addict with a methadone prescription. Hayes brought her son, Matangi Carlos, to a Charleston hospital after he stopped breathing on April 7. She told doctors and later Charleston Police investigators -she had rubbed liquid methadone on her son's gums. But "amount of methadone in the child's system was far greater than the amount would have been had she simply been rubbing it on his gums," Charleston detective Sgt.

Michael Gordon said of autopsy reports that cast doubts on Hayes' story. Hayes sat quietly in Magistrate Linda Lombard's courtroom Wednesday afternoon as she waited for her bond hearing to start, staring at the floor and sobbing into her hands. McMichael Daughters Mary M. Dash Rosa M. White, Son-In-Law, Grandchildren, Sisters, Brother, Nieces and Nephews COLUMBIA (AP) A grading error by a national testing company caused 150 South Carolina teachers to think they had failed a professional licensing exam when they actually had passed, state education officials said Thursday. The Educational Testing Service reported incorrect scores to 4,100 people acros's the nation who took the licensing exam between January 2003 and April 2004, delaying or preventing some teachers from getting jobs, the testing company said. ETS, a private company that adrninisters more than 12 million tests worldwide, began last week tracking down each person who received a faulty score to apologize and refund the $115 test fee and other expenses.

South Carolina is one of almost 20 states that use the Praxis exam in question, which tests teaching and content knowledge of prospective educators of grades seven to 12. 1 South Carolina does not track employment status of teachers so officials with the state Education Department said they do not know how many teachers who re FOR THE Orangeburg County The following permits were issued in the Orangeburg County Administrative Centre. Sadly Missed By, Aunts, Uncle Cousins ceived faulty scores may have lost jobs because of the error. There are likely few because the state gives teachers three years to earn a professional certificate, said Janice Poda, director of the state education agency's Division of Teacher Quality. Most of the middle and high school teachers who received faulty scores would have another chance to take the test before their jobs could have been at risk, education officials said. Poda said the Education Department began this week tracking down South Carolina teachers who received incorrect grades. The teachers will receive a corrected certificate.

ETS identified the error during a regular review of scores. The testing company found two groups of test-takers were given inappropriately stringent scoring on short-essay answers, said spokesman Tom Ewing. Panels of cunent or retired teachers are routinely hired by ETS to grade the tests, he said. ETS has also set up a hotline for those who took the test and have questions. It is 1-800-205-2626.
