Gunman robs couple at hotel Staff Report Law enforcement officials are looking for a gunman who robbed a Pennsylvania couple at Hampton Inn late Thursday. Deputies say an 82-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife were at the St. Matthews Road hotel when a gunman forced his way into their first floor room around 10 p.m. They told investigators the gunman pointed a silver handgun at them and demanded their cash and vehicle.

After taking about $500 from the couple, the intruder fled in their 2010 Chevrolet. Deputies called On-Star, which informed them the vehicle was stationary at a Foxberry Court residence less than two miles away. Deputies located the unoccupied Chevrolet. A witness told deputies a black male got out of the SUV and entered a silver Kia SUV driven by a 20- to 25-year-old black female. The gunman is described as a 25-to 30-year-oldblack male about six feet tall and weighing around 250 pounds.

Mrs. Lynn Elizabeth Mitchell Mrs. Lynn Elizabeth Mitchell, 51, a resident of Blackville, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at tRMC in Orangeburg. was 21,1960, she the daughter of Linwood Mitchell and the late Mary Bell Vaughn Mitchell.

She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by two daughters, Mary Lynn (Scott) Griffin of Denmark and Joanie (Shane) Spell of Denmark; and three sisters, Judy (James) Thompson of Blackville, Tammy (Andy) Dailey of Lexington and Terri (Chris) Sanders of Barnwell. She is also survived by two brothers, Allen (Tammy) Mitchell of Erwin, Tenn. and Stevie (Lizzie) Mitchell of Blackville.

She was predeceased by a sister, Sue Thompson. There are four grandchildren; Aiken Owens, Courtney Griffin, Cody Spell and Kyle Spell, all of Denmark. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Ghents Branch Baptist Church in Denmark, with the Rev. Bert Petty and the Rev.

Farrell Ray officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Norway. Visitation will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 17, 2011, in the sanctuary of Ghents Branch Baptist Church. Mercer Funeral Home of Denmark is in charge of arrangements.

Woman arrested on drug charges Staff Report A Cordova woman has been charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and controlled substances, Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said. Narcotics invesScott tigators allege they found 15 grams of marijuana, Xanax pills, $922 in cash, scales, plastic bags and other drug paraphernalia during a search of 28-year-old Crystal Ann Scott's Grove Drive home. A search of her residence later turned up "six different size clear plastic bags" of what is believed to be marijuana, officials said. Authorities are asking for the public's help locating a woman who's been missing fromher Watersprings Road home since April. Authorities say 62-year-old Marsha Houck was last seen by her boyfriend around April 25. He said he left her at home and when he returned she was missing. Family members told authorities that Houckhas illness, according to an incident report.

Mattie Mae Brown Thompson, 91, of 1314 Barnes Holly Hill, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Greater Unity AME Church, 744 Coach Road, Holly Hill, with Pastor Julius Steed officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She died Thursday, July 14, 2011. Mrs.

Thompson was born in Holly Hill, eldest daughter of the late Eddie Brown and Mrs. Etta M. Masheck Brown. She was educated in the public schools of Holly Hill and trained as a seamstress at Area Trade School in Denmark. She was a lifelong member of Greater Unity AME Church.

Her church affiliations included member and past president of the Senior Choir, the Women's Missionary Society, the Stewardess Board, the Ernest Brown Sixty- Plus Club, and student of the Sunday School. She was the widow of Ben Thompson and was predeceased by sons, Johnnie Lee, Lasalle, Samuel and Eddie Thompson. She was also predeceased by siblings, Elease Brown, Jacob "Buck" Brown, Eva Lee White and Beatrice Jenkins; and grandchildren, Lillie Jean, Eugene, and Robert. Her survivors include a devoted daughter, Joanna (Clay) Kirkland of Cordova; a loving son, Benjamin Thompson of Rego Park, N.Y.; granddaughters, Kirkland and Cherise Y. Pittman; grandsons, Ronald, Michael, Eric, Joseph and Richard; and three great- granddaughters, Rebekah, Hannah and Melia; and a host of special adopted grandchildren, special church sisters, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She was employed by Orangeburg Disability Board. Inher youth, she became a member of Unity Baptist Church. Upon moving to New York City, she joined St. Matthew's Baptist for Church where she worshipped over 40 years. Upon her return to Eutawville, she rejoined Unity Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Choir, The Deacons' Appreciation Board, President of the Prayer Band Ministry, and was founder of the Garden Gardenia's Ministry. She was also a member of Jehovah Chapter No.

203, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Praileau was the widow of James Praileau. She was predeceased by two sons, Prince Praileau and Willie Praileau and siblings, the Rev. Henry Ravenell (her twin), Abraham Ravenell, Lic.

Willie Ravenell, the Rev. Frances Ravenell and Mrs. Janetta R. Smalls. Her survivors include two daughters, Mrs.

Laura Wilkes of Eutawville, and Mrs. Caroline Crawford of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, James Ravenell of Cross; one sister, Mrs. Annie Bell Huger of Lincolnville; 14 grandchildren, 28 greatgrandchildren, six great -greatgrandchildren, greatgreat -great -grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Kearse died Wednesday, July 13, at Palmetto- Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She was born Feb. 7, 1920, to the late Joseph "Mudd" and Hattie "Missy" Singleton. At an early age she joined Union Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Mather High School, Beaufort and Voorhees College, Denmark.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Julius "Feebie" Kearse. One son Julius death. "Joey" Kearse precededher in Jessie and band resided in and later relocated to Ehrhardt. Here they resided for more than 50 years. After her marriage, Jessie moved her membership to St.

Lukes United Methodist Church. There she was a faithful member, serving as church secretary, United Methodist Women, delegate to annual conference, senior choir member, and Mother of the Church. She attended the Rhoads Senior Citizen in Bamberg. Mrs. Kearse was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Oak Grove Center Chapter No.

19, Order of the East- ern Star. She also was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for OCAB Community Action Agency (1992 to 1993), Distinguished Citizen of the Year from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Ebenezer Baptist Church Womens Support Group (1998). Survivors include sons, Charles (Joann) Kearse of Barnwell, Samuel (Kathleendeceased) Kearse of Orangeburg, Frankie (Skip) Kearse of the home, Donald (Licinia) Kearse of Orangeburg, Kenneth (Bridget) Kearse of Aiken; daughters, Barbara Kearse of Barnwell, Odessa (Christo- pher) Garrett of Ehrhardt and Cassandra Kearse of Columbia; one grandson raised in the home, Demetrius A. Charlotte Giles The funeral for Charlotte Giles, 86, of 1041 Park Orangeburg, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m before the service. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Mrs. Giles passed away at her daughter Joyce's home on Thursday, July 14, 2011, after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Laurens County, the daughter of the late Rufus Daniel and the late Vinnie Prather Daniel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Giles; two sons, Donnie and Michael; two sisters, Zollie Lanier and Ethel Bellew; one brother, Olin Daniel, and one grandchild, Donna Godfery. Charlotte was the loving and devoted Mother of Frances Hinson (Jerry) of Woodruff, Lois Tanner (Larry) of Cades, Joyce Weatherford (Lewis) of Orangeburg; five grandchildren, Curtis and Tim Hinson, Wayne and Mike Braxton, and Ruth Stephens; two stepgrandchildren, Lewis Jr. and James Weatherford; nine great -grandchildren, and six great -great grandchildren; sister, Pauline Jackson, of Joanna; sister-in-law, Annette Daniel of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at the home, 1041 Park Orangeburg, and at the funeral home. Visitation will be held 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday before the service at the funeral home. William James Warren Jr. William James Warren, 63, husband of Dr. Cheryl Hodge Warren and son of William James Warren Sr. and the late Ulhma Walker Warren was born in Aiken on Dec. 6, 1947.

He died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, in Mullins. He attended St. Gerard Catholic School until the family moved to Orangeburg in 1957. The rest of his elementary school education occurred at Christ the King Catholic School. In June of 1965, William graduated from Wilkinson High School and matriculated to South Carolina State College where he majored i in Agribusiness.

graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. After graduation, he served two years in the United States Army in the Vietnam conflict and received several medal commendation awards for his excellent performance. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he began a career as an Agricultural Management Specialist with the U.S. Government, Farmers Home Administration. After thirty years, he retired and extended his plight for public service as a loan officer, assisting the small businesses in the position as the Director for the Williamsburg Enterprise Community Commission, Inc.

For many years, his avocation was that of a disc jockey and his return from Vietnam, made his avocation an ongoing part -time job that he enjoyed. At the age of 7, he gave his life to Christ at Friendship Baptist Church, Aiken and later joined the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Orangeburg where he was a member of the Baptist Training Union and the junior choir. In 1973, Mr. Warren joined Mt.

Zion United Methodist Church, Kingstree and served in many capacities to include: Sunday school teacher, assistant superintendent for the Sunday school, and a financial adviser. He was a member of the Kingtree -Lake City Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, Inc. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife of nearly 38 years, Dr. Cheryl Hodge Warren; father and st William (Johnnie) Warren sister and brother-in-law, Eloise (Pierre) Mooney; mother -inlaw, Lauretha Hodge; sister-in-law and brother-inlaw, Attorney Audrey Hodge (Ollie Davis); stepsister and brother-in-law, Yvonne (Russell) Woodward; two nephews, Mooney and Brian (Dr. Kimberly) Woodward; two nieces, Christina Woodward and Travee (James) Sanderson; one grandniece, Aiyana Cheryl Sanderson; and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2011, 1 p.m. at Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church, 528N. Smith Mullins, with the pastor, the Rev. Felix Jordan, assisted by the Rev. Jack C.

Washington, eulogist, the Rev. Charles Johnson, Dr. Mack Hines and the Rev. Cynthia Brown. Interment will follow in Hodge Cemetery, Smithboro.

When deputies tried entering the trailer into the National Crime Information Center system, they discovered the vehicle identification number belonged to a trailer reported stolen out of Alabama, the report said.
